Man Starts Car In The Driveway To Heat It Up, Then Returns To Find A Ticket

Taylor Trupiano couldn’t believe it: He started his car to heat it up in the freezing Michigan weather, but when he returned, there was a ticket left for him with a $128 fine.

“I thought it was some kind of joke at first, and then I was thrown back by it. I was really surprised,” he told ABC. “I was in and out in probably about seven to eight minutes. So in that amount of time he ran up here, gave me a ticket and by the time I got out, he was nowhere to be seen.”

The ticket was for leaving the keys in the ignition of the car while the motor was running. While that isn’t illegal in the state, there are local ordinances against it.

However, the local police aren’t remorseful at all. They believe this practice leads to an increase in car thefts.

“We have five to 10 cars stolen this way every winter,” Roseville Police Chief James Berlin said. “It’s dangerous, and of course it drives everyone’s insurance rates up. It drives our crime rates up [too].”

He says it’s up to citizens to know the law and abide by it.

“Common sense says you don’t leave your car running unattended,” the police chief said.
